Imagine you’re an artist good at different things. So good that whatever activity you choose, you end up working for the best organisations, brands and institutions. That’s what happens to charming miss Julie Verhoeven, artist, illustrator and fashion designer. This friday, you can see her latest work for yourself at MU gallery. But first things first:

Are you the type of person that wears a protective sleeve over his cell phone?
“Life is too short for a protective phone sleeve. It’s good to live a little dangerously. My phone enjoys feeling a little sticky.”

Do you talk with your friends and see them a lot? Or are you super busy and do you let a strict agenda dictate the frequency of your encounters?
“I am good at texting but hate the phone, which can cause issues. I would like to dedicate more time to seeing my friends more frequently but on a positive creepy note – I would like to boast I have the bestest friends ever.”

Compared to them, do you consider yourself successful?
“No way.”

“I tend to become all uncomfortable, red and blotchy. As long as the words fantasy and fairytale aren’t mentioned I remain calm and contentish.”

You are not colorblind are you? I’ve read somewhere that a lot of artist suffer from this.
“I’m not colour blind …sounds good. I don’t fully understand the condition?”

Right. You’re still a tutor at Central Saint Martins: have you ever met Laura Mackness and seen her work? She graduated a little while ago and MonoBrow is a fan.
“I was one of Laura’s tutors. She is really great and her work excited and surprised me loads. I also secretly hoped she might give me a giant flocked eyelash but it never happened.”

Are you excited about any particular graphic design artist or movement at the moment?
“To be honest I look back studiously more than looking forward and around much but I love HEY HEY HEY and their car Tony-Brian.”

For an artist that’s being admired for her brightness I must admit I prefer your black and white work.
“Thanks.”

I just lied there! I also really like your colorful 3d thingy stuff! And I’d like to describe some of it as meticulously random. What happens to you when people try to describe your work with fancy words?
“I love your definition: spot on. For me it’s just the most painful thing to articulate it. I tend to become all uncomfortable, red and blotchy. As long as the words fantasy and fairytale aren’t mentioned I remain calm and contentish.”

Woah! Een pingback, dat klinkt bijna net zo gevaarlijk als barebacking. En nu?
