Greg Rivera is the founder of Mishka, a Brooklyn based label that pushes all the right buttons to appeal to a former He-man bedsheet owner like me. Now I could ask Greg about his collection of Mr T. dolls (biggest in the world) or why he is fascinated with monsters. But I prefer to ehrm, ask a couple of other questions.

When I first saw the Mishka hq tour video, I went nuts. I already loved the graphics of Mishka and after seeing your collection of toys and stuff I realised the source of Mishka’s inspiration was real, not something fad’ish, devised by cynical suits.
“Haha you are correct! We are pretty real about what we create and produce. I think that is what keeps us apart from other brands.”

Btw how do you look in a suit?
“I am sure I would look OK if I owned one. I really need a suit.”

What do you do to not become cynical in your business?
“Um, I think the best way is to focus on what you are doing and not be too concerned with what other people are doing.”

I find it hard to get excited about upcoming brands that tip their hat to popculture. You? Any tips?
“I think its hard for me to get excited about new brands in general. Not because im a cynic (hehe) I just think there is a lot out there that either try to hard, or do not have a concise idea of what they are trying to be or do. The tip that I give to all people starting brands and consider it: treat it like a business from the beginning, it will save you a ton of headaches later on. If you are already rich then you can do whatever you want.”

How long until that collaboration with Jim Phillips?
“Funny. Someone asked me about this just the other day. To be honest I think a Jim Phillips collab would be too obvious. I mean that is our attempt to persue him. If he happened to approach us or we were introduced to him in a random way then of course. I just dont think we would have the money to hire him!”

When I saw the logo of the Mishka LA store opening. It reminded me of one of the Monologo variants, made by  Raphaël Bartels. Do you like it?
“Of course I love it! Never saw that before but its great!”

Something completely different. As a kid I watched a brutal straight-to-video Ninja movie. In it was a scene where one of the bad guys was held onto a woodcutter bench thing. The blade cut him in half. I was ten. Somehow I have a feeling you might know the title of this one.
“Unfortunaly I do not, but it sounds excellent.”

Are you as excited about that Clash Of The Titans remake as I am? Any fond memories of the original?
“I am totally excited! I have a Kraken tattoo!”
